There is a new trend of visa scam that is going around in Australia. If you are an Indian living in Australia, you need to be wary. Even the High Commission of India cautioned Indian immigrants living in this Country.
According to the High Commissioner of India Navdeep Suri, people pretending to be officials from the Indian Consulate or High Commission call you and tell you that there is a problem with your visa or immigration status. They have some basic information about you and use that to con you. He goes on to say that, the High Commission website and official Facebook page have put out warnings.
However, several Indians have already lost their money due to these scams. These callers have even routed their calls through phone numbers assigned to the High Commission of India, Canberra or the Indian Consulate in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth.
The High Commissioner further said that the Australian federal police was already asked to investigate the issue by the High Commission.
Foreign Affairs and Trade Department, the Australian Government and Australian Federal Police are investigating these suspicious calls.
As this matter concerns Australian visa, the Indian High Commission decided to let the local authorities handle the issue.
*Note: Indian High Commission or the Indian Consulate does not deal with Indians in Australia regarding their Australian visa or immigration status unless there is a major issue.
