On Tuesday, January 29, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of 118 illegal immigrants in New York this month. 107 of these illegal immigrants have pending charges against them or are convicted criminals – a situation which led ICE to condemn local politicians for granting them protection at the expense of public safety.
ICE made these arrests during a five-day raid done this month in New York. According to the statement released on Tuesday, sanctuary cities are defying ICE detainers order which would have seen many of these immigrants handed over to the ICE by local authority following their release from prison. Many of these immigrants with a significant criminal record are therefore allowed back into the city which in itself is a potential threat to public safety according to ICE.
NYC Politicians – Magnet for More Illegal Immigration
ICE stated that the agency gives a quick update on the crimes of people it seeks to deport following the call for its abolition by many, including left-wing activists and several 2020 Democratic Party hopefuls, based on the charges that the agency targets law-abiding illegal immigrants.
The agency, therefore, gave more details concerning the latest arrests. It said 55 of the illegal immigrants either reentered the country after deportation or were not deported despite being granted deportation order. Weapons charges and assaults, as well as child sex crimes, are few of the prior convictions. The agency gave a long list of the criminal records of those arrested and have been lauded for such feat by ERO New York field officer, Thomas Decker. He said they got their job done inspire of the obstacles presented by local authorities.
The act of shielding these criminal immigrants from necessary justice is a key magnet for more illegal immigration according to the Tuesday release. The agency said it will continue to do all it can, despite lack of cooperation from local authorities, to see that the country is safe for all.
