As Trump’s administration continue to push aggressively for US-Mexico border wall funding, the President’s portrayal of undocumented immigrants as a major cause of crime in US added another episode on Sunday as Mr Trump claimed that thousands of immigrants who had earlier entered the country through the southern border are now in Texas prisons following conviction for sexual crimes against children.

Over the weekend, the US President released series of tweets in favour of US-Mexico border wall funding before finally releasing the news of thousands of immigrants who have been found guilty of sexual assaults against children and are now in various Texas jails. This he said without providing genuine facts to back such claim which has been a usual thing with him.

How true is the President Trump’s claim? His claim that undocumented immigrants are responsible for lots of criminal conducts in the US has not only been tagged unfounded but has also been disproved based on facts. According to available facts, his latest tweet has also been disproved.

Lower Arrest for Illegal Immigrants

Based on data from Texas, Cato Institute found that compared to native-born Americans, there are fewer undocumented immigrants with sexual crimes – based on 2015 data, it is 8% lower.

Also, according to a report first released in February 2018 which was updated in August, it revealed that illegal immigrants‘ conviction and arrest rates were lower than native-born Americans for most crimes.

There are decreased violence in states with more undocumented immigrants according to an article published in a peer-reviewed journal criminology in 2018.

Mr Trump named John Jones, Texas Department of Public Safety division director of intelligence and counter terrorism, in his Sunday tweet. John was said to have told Trump on Friday that over 4,000 illegal aliens have been incarcerated in the past seven years in Texas, 62% of which were unfortunately sexual assaults against children.

This is unusual as was confirmed by an insider from one of the divisions who said the department is not in the habit of releasing numbers of prisoners.

Border wall fight continues, this looks mostly like another desperate attempt by the current administration to the funding they want.
