An international student was arrested in Ontario, Canada for working beyond the number of hours permitted by a student visa and could be deported very soon. 22-year-old Jobandeep Sandhu, Indian, was arrested on 13 Dec 2017, by an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer who after stopping the commercial vehicle Sandhu was driving found out the student has been working beyond the number of hours international students are allowed to work per week. The police did a background check and found Sandhu had no previous conviction. Student Visa Work Condition Canada immigration laws give international students the opportunity to work up to 20 hours per week without obtaining a separate work visa and are allowed to work full time during scheduled breaks. According to the government of Canada, though students are allowed to work in order to gain experience and make money, all student permit holders must know the study is their primary focus and as such are not allowed to exceed the maximum 20 hours each week. As a result, Sandhu was regarded as inadmissible by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) for breaching the terms of his study permit. Reacting to the situation, Sandhu said he had to work full time to sustain his student status worth approximately $27,000 because his parents who took care of his tuition for the first semester could no longer afford it. He explained he did not work when he first came to Canada but later switched to an occasional part-time job. Things changed after he joined another college with a different schedule, and he began working about 40 hours per week as a truck driver. One of his lawyers, Adrienne Smith, said it is the first time he would see an OPP officer do immigration check about the number of hours someone works per year.
